Charity Match Results - 29th July

What a day! Our inaugural Athy Anglers Charity Match ran Saturday 29th July on our Grand Canal Match Stretch in aid of Willow Community Counselling Services. Athy Anglers are delighted to support such an important cause, and we managed to raise €270 for the match. We’d like to thank all the anglers that came out to fish and made it a very enjoyable day on the bank!

Our Sponsors

Vivado Fishing Tackle sponsored a superb Rod & Reel, a selection of weights, lines and hooks as well as an entire box (10KG!) of excellent groundbait! Thank you so much to Vivado for their sponsorship and partnership for the event, we were also delighted to be able to host Max from the Vivado team as an angler for the match! Thanks for coming Max!

Murphs Fishing Carlow sponsored another superb Rod & Reel (a beautiful light as anything shakespear!) as well as a preston catapult, groundbait box and additional assorted tackle items! Thank you so much to Murphs for the sponsorship and ongoing support of the club!

SuperValu of Athy sponsored us with a €25 voucher which was used to provide drinks & snacks for the anglers on the day. Kept us all going through the extra-long 7 hour match! Huge thank you to SuperValu for supporting us! And a big thank you to our own Chris Lawlor who handled acquiring and providing the refreshments, much appreciated Chris!

Manleys Menswear sponsored us with a €30 voucher, huge thank you to the folks at Manleys for the sponsorship! Very much appreciated and the prize winner was delighted to get it.

Monasterevin & Fisherstown Match Anglers ran a parallel match on the day and collected €20 towards the donation to Willow, big thank you to the Monasterevin Club Team for supporting us, very much appreciated by the club!

Additional mentions include Perry’s Supermarket who sponsored us with a voucher and McCauley’s Pharmacy who sponsored us a beautiful skincare giftset! Much appreciated and we will be passing those sponsorship items to Willow :)

Match Day

Anglers arrived at 09:30 to draw at 09:45. Max from Vivado brought a whole box (!) of groundbait as spot prizes so all anglers on the day got a bag of groundbait right at the get go. Big thank you Max!

14 Anglers attended on the day to fish the match, with 2 having to drop due to unforseen circumstances. Pegs were drawn and anglers made their way to the bank, this time without any incidents! Well done lads :)

All in was called at 11:00 and we were off!

A strong start for most pegs as the fish seemed to be on the feed. Early pickups of skimmers and roach set the pace. On the lock side of the stretch, towards peg 24, a few bonus tech were picked up. Up towards Peg 1, a slower start picking up mostly smaller fish.

A temporary all out was called at 2pm for refreshments on the bank. Chats were had and strategies made for the second half!

All anglers had lines back in the water at 2:30pm. The afternoon leg would prove slower for most pegs, though up towards peg 1 the skimmers had come back on the feed! In peg 16, Des struck into a monster Tench on a very light roach rig, fighting tooth and nail to try and bring the fish to heel. Ultimately, the tench would win this fit, wrapping itself around the grasses by the bank and snapping off the line. Well done Tench, you win this one!

All out was called at 18:00 and we set to weigh ins, and just look at all these happy anglers :)
