Nicky Cahill Memorial Match

A windy day today for the Nicky Cahill memorial match! Athy & District Anglers would host this match in the Marina club grounds and for something a little different, this match would be a rod only match! Poor weather and a few cold evenings had taken a toll on the Marina today, where we all met at 08:30 to get ready for the match. Pegs were drawn and we did a quick raffel for some spot prizes gratiously donated to the club by Tommy and Des! A fantastic landing net + handle along with a 10ft Korum Feeder rod, thanks lads :) What a great way to start the match! Vouchers were also gratiously provided by Clive Dunne of Elk Recruitment, the club would like to thank Clive for his sponsorship and continued endorsement of the club! Very much appreciated by all of us :)

Everyone moved off to their pegs to get set up. 15 anglers would fish today, and we were delighted to have 3 new pegs in the rotation for the Marina; pegs 16, 18 and 19 which were freshly cleaned during the week and the prior week.

A beautiful Robin enjoying a sneaky maggot, truly amazing the amount of wildlife in the Marina!

All in was called at 10:00 and we were off! …well, we were off slowly. The mix of colder weather, high winds and rains had caused the Marina to cool, and the fish were not interested in much of anything we had to offer. Perch would dominate the day, in terms of weighable fish, but jack Pike would contend as the most caught fish of the day! Tommy confirmed 4 jack Pike caught, Chris confirmed 3 and Chick confirmed another 3. Paula and Ryan both were hounded by larger pike throughout the day as well, doing battle with the keepnets to try and get the few fish that could be caught.

Rains came down from 13:00 onwards and the waters went quiet. Catching slowed to a still, with only the sound of bait hitting the water ringing out through the Marina as anglers attempted to entice the fish back to their swims.

All out was called at 15:00, a hard match overall for everyone. Astounding what some weather can do, going from over 300lbs caught in the prior match to a very hard days fishing, testing all anglers on the bank. We got right to business with the weigh ins.

A delighted Des with his 2ozs!

A cheery Chris with his 4oz Perch!

So here we are! The results of the Athy & District Anglers Nicky Cahill Memorial Match:

  1. Tommy Cahill - 4lb 4ozs

  2. Miroslav Svajlenin -3lb 10ozs

  3. Ollie Doyle - 2lb 13ozs

  4. Ciaran Dunne - 1lb 8ozs

  5. Declan Day - 1lb 7ozs

5th place was actually a 3 way tie, which had to be broken by a random draw! So commiserations to Chick (1lb 7ozs) and Jimmy (1lb 7ozs) who were robbed of the prize by Declan!

A great days craic despite the weather, and some great fishing on show to make the most of a tough session. Well done to everyone! Here’s looking forward to the next one!
