30th April Canal Match Results
What a heatwave! The weather could not have been better for todays Athy & District Anglers Canal Match. Scorching 20 degree heat, with some light summery showers and spotty overcast…yeah we’re laboring on about the weather because the fish were simply not interested today!
First we’d like to say a huge thank you to Murph’s Tackle Shop of Carlow for thier sponsorship of todays match. They went above and beyond with a fantastic keepnet bag prize for first place, an excellent roach lure consolation prize for last place and a big box of bait + bits for everyone in the audience!! Huge thank you again, very much appreciated by all of us here at the club. Make sure to head over to their website and check out what they’ve got!
Now on to the main event! We had a massive 18 angler turnout for todays match, delighted to see so many coming to fish our humble match stretches. Pegs were drawn at 09:15 and everyone made their way to the pegs (in an orderly and organized fashion…for the most part!).
All in was called at 11:00. Some early joy on Pegs 1 & 3 gave some of us hope that the fish would be coming on. This didn’t quite pan out. A very tough days fishing was had, with some of us not even getting a nock on any of our lines. Neither rods nor poles could get any touch of a fish in some of the swims. Overall 8 anglers would end up “DNW”, with no fish caught. Regardless of the presence of fish, the craic was mighty, and a great day was had even with nothing going for the pint and half of bait that was fed over the course of 5 hours :)
Better days were had on pegs 1 & 3, with Miro and Paula pulling some early results. Towards the other end of the canal Pegs 10 and 23 were offering a few fish as well.
Jimmy on peg 4 luckily struck into a root around 3pm, but unluckily it wasn’t regulation and therefor couldn’t be weighed in.
David on Peg 8 also struck into a tree branch, and was approved to weigh it in given the day at hand. However he unfortunately caught a few fish after the branch and voided his approval to weigh it in, sad days David!
Right before all out, Mick on Peg 17 struck into a beautiful Tench. After a good 10 minutes of fighting and letting the tench into the weed bank, the elastic gave up and the tench went free. Our condolences for your loss Mick, a tragic ending to a very sunny day :)
All out got called at 4pm and we weighted everyone in. Except the 8 anglers that didn’t catch anything. We didn’t weigh them in.
A big thank you to all the anglers for coming out to fish today, and for having great craic despite a very hard days fishing! Here’s looking forward to the next one, which we will likely run as an evening match to help mitigate potential tough fishing like today.
