Winter League Match 4 Results

Probably the coldest days fishing in the year! A balmy -2 degrees greeted us on the River Barrow match stretch on Sunday 11th. 7 brave anglers met at Shaws car park in Athy at 8:45am to draw the pegs and get ourselves set up for true winter fishing. With half of us over at the Castle side on pegs 3 through 6 and the rest of us on the Pettits side on pegs 13 through 16 the “All In!” was sounded at 10am.

Tommy all wrapped in thermals getting ready for a cold day!

A strong start was had for Tommy with good sized roach being picked up on a trotted float right from the get go! A beautiful 1+ pound roach was snagged in the early hours, setting the tone for the rest of Tommy’s day.

Des had a flying start with a beautiful roach hybrid also well over a pound! Chris started will with good sized Dace on a trotted float, switching to the feeder to pick up almost a dace per cast. Jimmy followed suit though committing to the rod for a bit too long might have cost him a placement instead of switching earlier to the pole!

A very slow start for Ryan, Ollie and Noel. Pegs 14 & 15 turned out to produce blanks for their anglers with not so much as a nible no matter the method. Pole, Rod & Feeder were thrown to get something but the only thing caught was frostbite!

Noel picked up 2 small fry getting himself on the board with 2ozs, better than a blank!

All out was called at 2pm and with numb fingers and toes we began packing up. The river can be a fickle opponent and it bested some of us. Overall some strong fishing for some of the pegs and sure what else would you be doing!
