May 20th Canal Match Results
Our first evening match of the year! After the bags (or lack thereof!) delivered by the canal match stretch on our last match, we decided to move this one from a Sunday morning to a Saturday evening match. Overall, this definitely helped deliver some better bags.
We had 18 anglers turn up to the bank again for this one, with some new faces taking part. Delighted to see more people getting involved with our matches!
The group met up at 13:00 at Stradbally Lock by our match stretch to do the draw. Another angler out for a days pleasure fishing was already catching tench by the lock so this alongside the great color in the canal bode well for our days fishing! With pegs drawn, anglers made their way onto the bank in order of last peg first. This went far better than our last match, with nobody mounting the bank out of order. Our first win of the day!
All in was called at 3pm and we were off! Some strong initial catches in the first ~hour including some fantastic Rudd, hybrids, skimmers, Tench & Bream. The majority of anglers would spend pretty much the whole day on the pole, hitting their deep & margin lines to draw those bigger fish out for catching. A lul in activity left a lot of us switching up our tactics and feeding patterns through the middle few hours. Towards the end of the match the bigger fish seemed to come back on and a strong finish was had particularly by our framers!
All out was called at 8pm and weigh ins commenced!
As you can see, much better results from the grand canal this match than the last! Who knowns if it was the time of day, the colour in the water or maybe just the fish fancying some bites but either way, a much better day had by all :)
A huge congratulations to our winner and all our framers! And a massive thank you to all who came on the day to fish, a great day overall.
Lastly a big thank you to everyone who came and helped clean the match stretch and get it ready for the day! The club greatly appreciates everyone who donates some of their time to help keep our stretches safe and fishable :)
